6 tips to buy the best for your nest

Want to invest the best furniture for your home? Nick Hartnack from Hart & Johanson knows good furniture, having been in the business for 15 years creating innovative and thoughtful designs for the hall, sitting room, kitchen, home office and bedroom; from urban chic to country cottage designs. I asked Nick for his expert tips on buying the perfect furniture for your home and here's what he suggests...

Choose timeless wooden bed frames

A beautiful, good-quality wooden bed frame creates a focus and will last many years. Far from being restrictive in terms of design, wooden bedroom furniture compliments a wide range of styles from contemporary to traditional. For ultimate support, make sure the bed slats are no more than 2cm apart.

Include a sideboard in your room scheme

Sideboards are a timeless classic and making a comeback among the style conscious. A well-chosen sideboard can make a real statement in the lounge and add interest to empty halls. When choosing a sideboard, measure the height, width and depth and make sure it doesn’t dominate the room. It should complement other furniture while providing ample storage. Drawers and cupboards will help create a clean look and leave the top free from clutter.

Create more space at home

Accentuate the feeling of living space by hanging a mirror framed in matching wood above the sideboard. To add a chic and unique flavour, choose an elaborately styled mirror hung above a simple oak sideboard.

Buy extending furniture

If having people to dinner leaves you reaching for patio chairs and a trestle table, it’s definitely time to invest in an extending table. This doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the look of your dining table. When shopping around, make sure it’s both comfortable for every day use and when entertaining. Designs such as our Charleston table uses a unique extending mechanism, which means no one is left straddling a leg.

Care for your wooden furniture

DON’T forget to use polish. Buying solid wood furniture is an investment, and while it sounds simple to suggest using polish, given the right attention solid oak will wear well with age.

DO avoid aerosol polishes, which promote silicone build-up. Try using Rydenor Waxwing instead. It’s specially formulated to give great depth to the finish.

Complement the look with this season’s brights

This season, bold colours look great against rich oak and create a streamlined modern feel. For a softer country cottage look, choose feminine florals in fresh fruity shades...To check out some hot shades for this season, click here
