4 sizzling summer hot spots

Wondering where to lay your beach hat and Kindle this summer? These stunning suggestions from award-winning holiday specialist Original Travel will give you some food (and Sangria) for thought. Enjoy...
Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

‘But what about hurricane season?’ I hear the climatologists among you ask. Well yes, technically the hurricane season runs from June, but you’d be monumentally unlucky to be affected any time before August when the rainy season kicks in anyway. BA now fly direct into Cancun, and there are a string of lovely hotels along the coastline known as the Riviera Maya. Add wonderful diving and impressive Mayan ruins within easy reach and this is a top destination.

The Algarve, Portugal

Not the resort and golf course part you understand, but further west towards the beautiful Capo St Vincent and a coastline protected by national parks. There are excellent hotels from the brand new Hotel Martinhal to one of our personal favourites, the tiny and charming Monte Velho. Both are near lovely beaches, and this is also an excellent place for learning to surf for adults and children alike, although you can bet on the youngsters picking it up a good deal quicker.

Sardinia, Italy

While you can – should you choose – pay some of the most eye-watering prices of any hotels in Europe here, there are other more sensibly prices options as well. Professional people spotters could spend a summer ogling the oligarchs posing on superyachts in Porto Cervo, but the island itself is indescribably beautiful. Seeing is believing.

Cyprus

Quite simply one of the Med’s finest destinations. There are multi-award winning family hotels such as the Almyra and Anassa, which somehow manage to be both slick hotel for adults and family-friendly at the same time, and any number of excellent alternatives. Good weather is all but guaranteed as the island basks in over 300 days of sunshine a year, and culture vultures can even gnaw on some fine classical ruins, Byzantine churches and crusader fortresses.
