Decorating the nursery is a fun task. And time is on your side – nine months in which to furnish it is enough, wouldn’t you say? But choosing the perfect theme, furniture and storage solutions that will grow with your child and all their toys, books and ‘stuff’ can often be tricky. That’s certainly what designer Sarah Matthews thought when she went looking for nursery pieces for her own home, whose nusery furniture and furnishings company Bambizi came into being as the result of her wish to create the ideal nursery for her baby daughter.
‘Before she was born, I’d worked as an interior designer and had fallen in love with the nursery furniture I’d seen at furniture shows around the world,’ explains Sarah. ‘Once it came to furnishing my own nursery however, it was soon clear that I’d only be able to create my dream nursery by designing it myself! The furniture I saw in UK shops was perfectly functional, but it wasn’t what I wanted. I knew I’d be spending a lot of time in the nursery and I wanted it to match the rest of my home. I saw it in my mind’s eye as something that would reflect my own style, and that would be well made enough to grow with my child rather than being thrown away after the first couple of years.’
As a result, Bambizi designs aren’t pieces of furniture that will end up in an empty loft space. A single cot, for example, transforms from a cot to cot-bed to day bed, which makes these solid designs something that can be passed on to future generations.
‘I was lucky enough to turn my vision into reality as my husband owned a kitchen manufacturing company at the time and said that if I designed my dream nursery, he would ask his cabinet makers to make it,’ continues Sarah. ‘At first I just wanted to create my own special space. But then I started to think: surely there are other expectant mothers out there who feel the same as me — mothers who want high-quality nursery furniture that is well made, safe, and looks beautiful? In the few spare moments during my daughter’s first year, I designed a range of cots, dressers, changing stations and armoires. I ended up with hundreds of drawings, and then chose my favourites — and Bambizi was born.’
With solid wooden furniture (with the option of hand-painted finishes too) used for armoires, cots, chairs and dressers, Sarah’s designs certainly stand out from regular high-street looks. There’s a gorgeous range of accessories to complement the look too, including pretty wall art featuring metallic butterflies, ferns and grass, delicate hanging mobiles and beautiful linens and mattresses.
Bambizi was the winner of Best Interiors Collection/Furniture at the Junior Design Awards 2011.
