Last week I was working on a ‘cosy’ feature for Woman magazine and it got me thinking about how I got started in interiors. It was all down to cushions. Well actually it was because I got really into making elaborate tassels and needed somewhere to put the tassels, which led to cushions and onto curtains and the rest, as they say, is history!
I can’t be the only one with a mild obsession with cushions can I? It’s just, I can’t get enough of them, and I also can’t choose just one! The key is to have lots to choose from, after all, if you have enough you can move them around your playing with the look on a regular basis – a boudoir cushion can look great in the living room and a living room cushion can work in the dining room: it’s the new quick decorating fix. Forget about paint – just move your cushions around to feel like you have a whole new colour scheme, or better still treat yourself to some new ones each season. Other halves look away now because you just don’t get it – they always move them out of the way when they sit down don’t they? Or is that just mine?!
There’s something about typography on a cushion that’s so enticing – whether it’s simply a ‘Paris’ logo or a whole quote, I love it. Betsy Jarvis is a new find for me, but I love her vintage designs so much I may need another, longer sofa…
When it comes to sheer cosiness you can’t beat the wool cushions and throws from Peacock Blue. I bought a check throw of theirs around 10 years ago and it’s just got better with age.
For something a little bolder, I’ve got my eye on the scrabble letters from The Letter Room – quirky and cool and great for adapting to modern and classic looks as the mood takes you…
A big trend in homewares this season is travel, whether that’s a cushion in the shape of a stamp, postcard or simply with a skyline silhouette or name. The look is taking over from the huge Union Jack trend, which I’m sure will come back even stronger next year with the Olympics.
