Love city life? Or do you prefer to delve in and out? Either way, I hope you’ll agree that these wonderful typographic maps by artist and designer Ursula Hitz are a wonderful celebration of some of the world’s best-known cities. Born in rural Switzerland, Ursula has cultivated diverse talents in typography, graphics and even cheese making (!), but since moving to the big smoke a decade ago, she’s focused on location and place. Places that include New York, Rome, Paris and also London gems such as Camden, Brixton, Clapham and Chelsea.
She’s interested in the way that letters capture not only the dimensions of a place, but its personality too. ‘Unlike regular maps, mine don’t focus on streets or buildings,’ she says. ‘Instead, they build an organic texture of words that grow from the centre – in the way that most cities have grown.’ The flow of her maps are certainly rather mesmerising, don’t you think?
The Ursula Hitz promotion at ACHICA is on now and ends at 7am Thursday 27th October.
