Have you got tickets to an event at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games yet? If not, there’s still time to buy tickets for certain events at the official site. I did enter the ballot to buy tickets a while back and managed to secure a pair of tickets to ‘handball’. Not too sure of the rules, but an image of Ben Stiller in the film Dodgeball springs to mind. It sounds fun.
To celebrate the games, 12 of the UK’s finest artists have created art works, which have been made into posters. Since 1912, each Olympic host city has commissioned one or more posters to celebrate the games and previous artists have included David Hockney, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. For the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games its great to see the high caliber of artists chosen to depict artworks continue. Works by the likes of Tracey Emin, Martin Creed, Chris Ofili and Rachel Whiteread are taking centre stage. It’s exciting to see framed versions of these prints at ACHICA this weekend too – the London Olympics is very nearly here and I can’t wait.
Rachel Whiteread, LOndOn Olympics 2012 - These rings explore the emblem of the Olympic Games, and also represent marks left by drinking bottles or glasses [above].
Tracey Emin, Birds 2012 - Emin took the Paralympic values of Inspiration and Determination as the starting point for her print and created what she describes as a ‘love letter’ [below].
Chris Ofili, For The Unknown Runner - The Unknown Runner, a figure framed by a classical Greek vase, sprints by a watching crowd. The runners on a hill that Ofili can see from his window inspired the title [below]
Martin Creed, Work no.1273 - For this work, Creed has made five single brush marks using a palette derived from the Olympic colours. The marks are arranged in an ascending form that represents an extended podium offering places beyond first, second and third [below].
Which one is your favourite?
The London 2012 Prints promotion at ACHICA starts at 7am Saturday 3rd December and ends at 7am Wednesday 7th December.
