Just like a jar of Colman’s, mustard is hot this season. And just like a jar of Colman’s, a little goes a long way, serving to pep up more neutral colours with a little bit of a fiery accent. Seasonal colour trends are often slightly frustrating – it can be hard to drop them into an already established interiors scheme – but this moody, dusky yellow is surprisingly versatile, going with everything from red to blue, white to grey. It warms up neutral palettes, and tones down more vibrant ones, it is subtly sophisticated without being dull. The trick is not to overuse it – steer clear of the canary-esque feature wall – but simply mix in a little mustard to spice up your living room. Quietly becoming a small part of, rather than the main focus of your living room, this is one surprisingly mellow yellow.
Extra sauce – in the lobby of 45 Park Lane, London’s newest luxury hotel, dark yellow and red work together like a mustard and ketchup (above).
Great Dane – This Apple cushion from Scandinavian company Ferm Living mixes yellow and teal for a mid-century motif.
In the pink – Darlings of Chelsea take a spin with mustard and fuchsia for this Enzo swivel chair.
Techicolour dreamboat – This light fantastic from Hunkydory Home proves mustard really does go with everything.
Plugging the gap – BC designs taps into the trend with this Excelsior bath tub.
