Today ACHICA Living is coveting Bronte’s range of fine woollen throws. Wonderful photo from Bronte (above) isn’t it , but don’t you just hate it when your scarf gets trapped in a tree? I wonder who had to climb the tree to get this money shot – that would have been a fun photoshoot. Bronte really is a gorgeous brand – as well as selling sumptuous woollen throws and cushions, Bronte has a fascinating history and this year it celebrates its 175th anniversary. The company is owned by Abraham Moon and Sons, a woollen mill that was founded in 1837. It’s quite a unique mill in that it’s one of the last vertical mills left in the UK, which means it undertakes all processes from raw wool to finished product all in its mill in Guiseley on the outskirts of Leeds. When the raw wool arrives at the mill, the company undertakes the dying, blending, carding, spinning of the yarn, weaving and finishing it all to create beautiful woollen fabrics and home accessories. They say that having wool in and around your home has real benefits. To find out exactly why, ACHICA Living caught up with Bronte who explains its appeal. And, yes, rule number one is not to leave it hanging around in a tree…
Wool is a natural insulator
Wool can insulate the home providing and retaining warmth; in turn reducing energy costs in the home. Wool carpets and furnishings will absorb echo and reduce room-to-room noise transfer. Who knew?
Wool is a safe solution
Wool is a safe fibre for home interiors as it is naturally flame retardant due to its high water and nitrogen content. It has a higher ignition threshold than many other fibres and will produce less toxic and noxious fumes.
Wool is comfortable
Softness is a key asset of wool in the home; it creates a feeling of luxurious comfort.
Wool is sustainable
Every year a sheep produces a new fleece; making wool a renewable fibre source.
Wool is biodegradable
When wool is disposed of it will decompose over time and not end up in landfill
Wool is natural
Sheep live on grass, water, fresh air and sunshine. Sheep produce a fibre that has become one of the most effective natural forms of all-weather protection known to man.
Wool is breathable
Wool’s natural structure allows it to absorb and release water vapour into the atmosphere and regulate temperature.
Wool is durable
Wool is known to be strong and resilient, a wool fibre can be bent 20,000 times without breaking and still have the power to recover.
Wool is elastic
The wool fibre has a unique crimp providing it with a natural elasticity, which means it will return to its natural shape and resist compression. Wool maintains its good appearance in the longer term – this reduces the need to replace and adds value to the product.
Wool is easy to care for
Wool is easily maintained – it has the ability to trap dust due to its microscopic scales so carpets and upholstery can be simply vacuumed to capture dust and be revitalised. Wool is also hydrophobic, which means that spills are initially repelled allowing adequate time to deal with spillages. Bronte does advise you to dry clean its products for best results, but should something get spilled or dropped it suggests the following to ensure stains and marks do not ruin your wool:
1 – Scoop up solids with a knife or spoon.
2 – Blot up liquids by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissues.
3 – Before treating the stain, test the treatments on an inconspicuous area for possible colour change. Always use a specialist wool treatment that respects the fibre for stains.
4 – With blotting or dabbing motion, work inwards from the edge of the stain to prevent it spreading
5 – Do not rub during the stain removal or rinsing stages.
6 – When attempting to remove stains, ensure that the fabric is dry before proceeding to the next step of the treatment.
7 – Rinse by applying clear, tepid tap water using a clean cloth or sponge.
8 – Once the stain has been removed, blot up moisture by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissues.
9 – Do not lean on or cover the treated area until it is dry.
