In the last week, ACHICA Living has been About Town at the inspirational Milan Furniture Fair 2012, aka the Salone Internationale Del Mobile di Milan – an annual fair that showcases the latest in furniture and design around the world. We’ll share our low-down from the show on the blog very soon. In the meantime, here are some highlights from another stunning design show that we recently visited – the Architectural Digest Home Design Show 2012, held during the New York Design Festival.
This year, the Architectural Digest Home Design Show 2012 featured beautiful and original furniture, including the stunning Gubi-style mirrors above (don’t you just love mid-century style mirrors?!). As well as celebrating well-crafted, simple yet elegant pieces, there was also vibrant and unique furniture designs too. From stand to stand, each piece looked so tactile and strokeable that it took ages to navigate around the exhibition! Here are a couple of wonderful designers from the AD show who are definitely ones to watch…
I got chatting to Czech designer Palo Samko who has a studio in Brooklyn and uses salvaged wood to create exquisite pieces of furniture and decorative homewares (above and below). I particularly loved his walnut framed mirrors with leather backing and strap. Equally beautiful are his Rosewood Credenza side cabinets (below). Even though his work has a timeless quality, it has a sense of fun and quirkiness to it too, illustrated for example in the very tall, ladderback chairs, which Palo is holding above.

Another designer whose work is unmissable is Bart Niswonger. Bart’s work is completely different in style to Palo Samko’s but equally as cool. Bart’s designs are known for their bright colours and rich textures. He builds functional contemporary furniture using diverse materials, from locally sourced domestic hardwoods to brightly coloured cast urethane plastic. What’s great about his work is that he uses unexpected colours on traditional forms, which completely transforms the pieces. ‘With the right design, a bright, textured piece can feel equally at home in a farmhouse decorated with antiques, as in a modern New York loft,’ says Bart.
Bart’s furniture is fun and functional. ACHICA Living is loving Bart’s tie too!
