‘Don’t be afraid of the weird and wonderful,’ says Dupenny’s Emily Dupen-Hopkins

The face behind those fun and fabulous Dupenny handmade wallpapers, homewares and accessories is founder Emily Dupen-Hopkins. Here she shares with ACHICA Living her top tips on how to make a house a home...

Mix it up...

Although I love rooting around in Brighton's vintage and second hand shops like Department in Hove and Snoopers Paradise in the North Laines, I also like to keep an eye on modern designers. My favourite places to shop for inspiration are England At Home in Brighton's South Laines and of course Liberty in London.

Don't be afraid of the weird and wonderful...

Amongst my current favourite designers is Ibride and their exquisite trays portraying a disturbingly beautiful array of chimera, half-human half-beast creatures. An item like this will make your home that bit more interesting and let your personality show through.

Don't underestimate the Wow factor...

One piece can make a room. Whether its a luxurious chaise longue, a statement Art Deco mirror or an amazing collection of vintage plates on the wall. The rule is to concentrate on one or two items and engineer the rest of the decor around them.

A picture tells a thousand stories...

You can never have enough pictures on the wall. Try mixing the old with the new. Posters, art prints, vintage magazine pages, snapshots of your friends and family, random photos of characters and places you don't know. Collect different picture frames to arrange them all in.

Wallpaper!

As a wallpaper designer I am endlessly fascinated by the ways it can transform a room. Although I love designing in a monochrome palette, I'm not scared of a splash of colour! I especially love the many beautiful designs on show in Brighton Pavilion.

Whether you choose to have just one bold statement wall or a more subtle design to cover a whole room, make sure its something you can live with. This doesn't mean it has to be boring, but find something that's really reflective of your own style and personality. After all fashion is transient, style is timeless!'
