Expert interiors advice from David Linley of British design company LINLEY

David Linley knows good design. The legendary designer founded LINLEY back in 1985, a company which is world-renowned for its design and creation of fine furniture and interiors. David Linley's first collection was unveiled at Christies that very year, followed by the launch of the first showroom opening. David’s mother, who is the late Princess Margaret, sister to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, encouraged his creativity with her passion and talent for music and art and over the years David has written numerous books and lectured around the world at prestigious venues such as the V&A Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. ACHICA Living caught up with David Linley to suss out some expert advice room by room…

When it comes to redecorating the living room, where’s the best place to start? With the sofa, floors, windows or with the walls?

Think about the architecture and proportions of the building you live in. Take this as your starting point for any design scheme. In the initial stages of designing a room one of the first things we have to think about is the existing fittings; doors and the choice of floor, skirting boards and what architectural features we have to work with. So, the choice of material for the doors and floors are some of the first decisions to be made. As the project progresses the furniture can be selected and designed and the accessories chosen.

What are the rules when it comes to mixing styles, woods and finishes?

You can mix and match any furnishings if it looks and feels right, especially the old with the new so don’t be afraid to do so. Antiques and contemporary furniture sit very happily side by side. The same applies to art.

What essentials should every kitchen have?

A good chopping board - the LINLEY | Tom Aikens range is fantastic because it is not only beautifully made but also eminently practical from an end user’s perspective.

Any tips for making the bathroom look unique and stylish?

A bathroom is a room designed to clean in so everything you put in it must reflect this. For example:

- Make sure you have good lighting for makeup and washing. Don’t use too much downlighting as it gives you bad bags!

- Clear and large mirrors are essential.

- Surfaces should give off a good warm light  and marble does this well.

- The bath and shower should be separate.

- Everything you touch should have a sensual reaction, so a heated floor is a luxurious addition to a bathroom.

- To finish off, the most important addition would of course be pampering products to help you relax in the bath. Try Serena Linley soaps, fragrances and candles.

What's your top style tip?

Just remember to keep to your own taste and be honest about it - do not try and be something you’re not.
