10 ways to be fashion forward

There’s really nothing like being first with a new trend, rather than hopping on board later down the line. We’re not talking fly-by-night trends here, but looks that remain fresh and will last you from season to season. As for your clothes, so for your home – and if you want to make sure your interiors are ready for autumn/winter 2012, here’s what you need to know…

1 If economic gloom and a summer of rain are getting you down, a dose of glamour may be the answer. Add sparkle with metallic and mirrored finishes. Nothing shiny and tacky, of course, but sophisticated and shimmering. See, you feel better already, don’t you?

2 Or cheer yourself up, part two… Think checked upholstery, think wool and tweed, think Fifties style – a different remedy but still a great antidote to gloom. Cushions, throws, window treatments… they’ll all carry off the checked look with aplomb, too.

3 Make it graphic. These motifs are centre stage this autumn. Be bold by using them on your walls, or go for a touch or two with cushions and throws.

4 Blue is beautiful and making its rather special presence felt on upholstery, in fabric, rugs, tableware, art and accessories. Go for one sophisticated shade, or look for different tones in one piece, or fabulous blue pattern against a pale ground.

5 Welcome in the wildlife. Choose woodland-inspired shapes in decorative ornaments and as motifs on all sorts of lovely things. Foxes, owls – particularly – and birds generally, deer: go on, give them a home.

6 Feel the quality, or at least the cosiness, of chunky textural weaves. They look comfortable, they feel comfortable – what more could you ask for?

7 Those still mourning the end of the Jubilee celebrations might like to embrace the new season’s purples – after all, it’s a truly regal colour. Rich and luxurious, it also works perfectly alongside gold or a peacock blue if you like your room schemes dramatic.

8. Further to our previous discussion…we talked Scandinavian style in a previous post, and this isn’t a brand-new trend for autumn. You’ll forgive us for returning to it, we hope, because it ticks all the boxes: important look for the new season; fabulous combo of function and form; makes your home look great. The Kubikoff Slice Armchair from ACHICA adds the perfect Scandi touch to your dining table, for example.

9 Florals are always with just round the corner. The latest incarnations are boldly scaled and fresh rather than small and ditzy, so step away from country style for something that makes more of a statement.

10 Let’s not neglect the kitchen – it is Kitchen & Dining week at ACHICA’s Summer of Inspiration over on Facebook after all. Indulge in bolds, with toasters and kettles that team stainless steel and black and a pop of a brilliant bright in their finishes, as well as accessories such as coffee makers and salt and pepper mills, with colour confidence.
