If you've ever been to the beautiful Surrey village of Ripley you'll know what an idyllic place it is. And within its charming traditional high street at ‘The Clock House’ sits Drakes restaurant. Founded by top chef Steve Drake, the restaurant has a menu that ACHICA Living thinks is so out of this world you’ll be sitting on a cloud! Indeed. Here's a run through of the food from our visit, which is just too good not to shout about. . .
Drakes has been awarded a Michelin star for eight years running and having the pleasure of sampling the unique and delicious food, which includes the Flavour Discovery tasting menu, it's easy to see why. Owner Steve Drake has impressive culinary experience. Before starting up his own restaurant with wife Serina in 2005, Steve gained a Roux Scholarship and worked with Marc Veyrat in Annecy. He has also worked in some of the UK's best restaurants, including at the Ritz Hotel.
On arrival to Drakes we enjoyed an aperitif at the bar chosen by the in-house Sommelier, Thierry from Paris, who is passionate about wine and enjoys discovering delicious bouquets from small producers. How could we resist? We sat down for the Flavour Discovery nine-course taster menu and with every other course Thierry kept our glass attentively topped up with his carefully chosen wines – including a glass of fizz to go with the starter canapé of ‘Chicken liver parfait with curried meringue, sesame and blue cheese short bread.’ Pictured below, they taste incredible.
What’s great about Drakes is the unexpected mix of flavours and the element of surprise in not knowing what say ‘Scallop with Sea buckthorn and Sweet potato’ might taste like. FYI, delicious. Or what might turn up at your table next, such as this ‘Red pepper brioche and sour dough bread selection’. Wow.
Within the Flavour Discovery taster menu we also tried 'Chicken: Red cabbage, onion and wild garlic' and ‘Leek: Burnt aubergine, onion, mushroom milk’ (pictured below). The presentation was fun and exciting. Yum.
And then there were the three desserts - not one, not two, but three! Each mouthful as light and interesting as the next. We had ‘Parsnip: Blackberry compote, yoghurt, sorrel ice and parsnip’ (pictured top)', with 'Fig: Rocket, goat's cheese' and 'Chocolate: Walnut, pear, coriander’ (pictured below). Who knew these ingredients could taste so good together. Oh and did we mention the Petit Fours for afters?
We think Steve Drake has got it spot on with the exciting Flavour Discovery taster menu at Drakes. If you get the chance to visit we think it will certainly leave you with a story to dine on for years to come…
