If you’re just not a sporty type and want to escape the running, jumping and swimming this weekend, how about these creative pursuits instead…
Round and round and round: North of the border, Dundee Contemporary Arts is showing Infinite Jest, an exhibition by three artists, Cinthia Marcelle, Rob Pruitt and William Mackrell, who explore circular narration, infinite loops and möbius strips, variously using candles, choc-chip cookies and scrunched up paper. The title of the exhibition is taken from the complex novel of the same name by David Foster Wallace.
Get exploring: If that all sounds a bit highbrow, how about getting creative yourself? Keri Smith’s book “How to be an explorer of the world” is aimed at inquisitive children and grown-ups alike. Tasks to unleash your inspiration include assembling a collection of found typography and documenting sounds and smells. It’s beautifully produced and will have you feeling more excited about life in minutes.
The Wahaca Southbank Experiment: Everybody knows you can’t be creative on an empty stomach, so we’ve got to have some food in this list. Eight shipping containers have been transformed into a two-level space on London’s Southbank, with panoramic views of the river. What’s more, Wahaca is using this space to experiment with new dishes, the most popular of which will make it into their regular restaurants. If that’s not enough to tempt you, they have a dedicated tequila bar serving award-winning tequila!
Hepworth Wakefield: The RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist has been announced and the Hepworth Wakefield is rightly included. The current exhibition, Post War British Sculpture and Painting, runs alongside the permanent collection of Barbara Hepworth work, and explores representations of the body from artists including Henry Moore and Francis Bacon.
Snap-happy: Or head outside with a camera and challenge yourself to photograph everything on this list: something blue, a condiment, a dog, movement, growth, someone older than you, the horizon, reflection and something tiny. Mount up the resulting nine pictures into a collage. Better still get together with some friends and make it a competition. Send us in some snaps if you do have fun with it…Happy Weekend!
