London Design Festival is lighting up Britain this week and celebrates its 10th anniversary. To mark this, Established & Sons has commissioned ‘Bench Years; 10 benches in 10 materials by 10 designers’. The benches are installed in John Madejski Garden at the centre of the V&A, and seek to challenge conventions about public seating, and the limitations of materials.
The ten designers and material sponsors are: Alexander Taylor, working with Caparo (Stainless Steel); Martino Gamper, The American Hardwood Export Council (thermally modified American red oak, soft maple, ash, yellow birch and tulipwood) Luca Nichetto, Nardo Vetro (glass); Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, Torart (marble); Konstantin Grcic, Bisazza (Glass mosaic); Fernando Brizio, Amorim (cork); Felix de Pass, Established & Sons (steel); Jasper Morrison , Lowinfo (concrete); AL_A, Ceramica Cumella (ceramic); and Sam Hecht & Kim Colin, Industrial Facility,DuPont™ Corian® (Corian®).

“The Bench Years project is a one-of-a-kind opportunity and we are excited to celebrate the 10th year of the Festival through this collaboration with The London Design Festival,’ says Established & Sons CEO Maurizio Mussati. ‘Established & Sons is known for being at the forefront of exploring new ideas, so it was only natural for us to be part of one the most prestigious events of LDF.’
Our favourite benches include Martino Gamper’s infinity chair, pictured below. Second from right is Martino Gamper himself.
Barber & Osgerby’s Western Façade [pictured below] is pieced with holes to let the light shine through showing off the marble’s translucency.
We also love Konstantin Grcic’s glass mosaic bench, which is simply two uprights with space between for your bottom!
