Have you ever wondered how the chair you’re sitting on was made or what in fact it’s actually made from? Or perhaps – who made it or how long it took them? X3 at Super Brands is part of the London Design Festival and this year it gave visitors a chance to watch not one, not two, but three chairs being designed and made right before your eyes.
Creative Research and Development is a branding and graphic design studio based in London. It provided a glass box studio, filled it with tools and materials and then commissioned three designers; Sam Weller, Alex Hellum and Jack Smith to each come and make a chair in front of the gathering crowds.
Sam Weller’s chair is a simple wooden construction with bags of personality, which he just managed to completed within the six hour timeframe, putting the final coat of wax on in the last few moments. RCA graduate Sam has studied product design, industrial design and typography and has exhibited all over Europe.
Alex Hellum was the only one of the three to add colour to his chair, painting the seat a bold red. He describes his design ethos as being based on “observation, utility and honest use of materials” and said: “It was a really good feeling and a great experience pushing my ‘bodging’ skills to the limit.”
And finally Jack Smith, is one half of design duo SmithMatthias. He created an elegant chair with a more complex design – the off kilter cross batons really adding a quirky aesthetic. Jack is also a graduate of the RCA and studied at Sheffield Hallam University, where he met design partner Gemma Matthias. Inspirational stuff.
