The A-Z of Design: D is for Desalto

Since the 1950s Desalto has been part of the tradition of Italian design masters. As Desalto furniture comes to ACHICA this week, we go behind the brand to find out more...

It all began when… Brothers Ettore, Fausto, Ambrigio and Walter Orsenigo founded Desalto Spa in 1991 with the intention of simplifying traditional production processes to enable industrial manufacture.

They now employ cutting-edge technologies such as a structural steel laser cutting, the amalgamation of different materials like metal, glass, wood and plastics, and robotic welding and painting. The 10,000m2 production plant keeps every part of the process from raw material processing right through to final finishes in-house.

Momentum gathered… Desalto’s moment in the spotlight came when they won the Best of the Best Award in 2003 and again when they won the Classic Innovation Award in 2004; both as part of the Interior Innovation Awards at IMM Cologne. They went on to win both the prestigious Red Dot Design Award and the wallpaper* Design Awards in 2009. And they have just won the IMM Best of the Best Award again for the 25 table.

The mood of the moment… Cutting edge technologies, a cabinet full of awards and investment in relationships with designers, both new and established, have created a virtuous circle. The list of designers Desalto now works with reads like a who’s who of international design - and includes Arik Levy, Shin Azumi and Hannes Wettstein. Many of their products have become bestsellers, such as the Helsinki and Liko families of tables and the Kloe armchair.

More than a label, it’s a way of life… The flexibility of Desalto chairs and tables means that they can be used inside or outside, and in homes as well as in cafés and restaurants. The ability to adjust heights, add wheels or drawers and customise with accessories means that the products work around your life rather than vice versa. And they look pretty good too.
