As Givenchy watches and jewellery comes to ACHICA this week, we go behind the brand.
It all began when...Count Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy, youngest son of the Marquis of Givenchy, founded The House of Givenchy in 1952. Coming from a family of artists and set designers, he was destined to do something creative for a living, and after being inspired by the World Fair in Paris in 1937, he decided he wanted to work 'somewhere in fashion design'.

Momentum gathered… While at the helm as designer of the label, Hubert de Givenchy was known for his modern, feminine style. Perhaps his most loyal client was Audrey Hepburn, and so Givenchy clothes starred in films like Sabrina, How to Steal a Million and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Due to other famous clients including the Guiness, Grimaldi and Kennedy families, Givenchy clothes even made an appearance at John F Kennedy’s funeral, securing the brand’s iconic status in the 1950s and ‘60s.
The mood of the moment… Since Hubert de Givenchy’s retirement in 1995, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen and Julian MacDonald all took a turn at the reins before Riccardo Tisci took over in 2005.
More than a label, it’s a way of life… Tisci’s gothic influences combined with space age minimalism have revitalised the brand and made it relevant in the 21st Century. Fans include Hollywood actress Rooney Mara who wore Givenchy at the 2012 Academy Awards and Madonna, whose costumes for her Sticky & Sweet Tour and 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show were designed by Givenchy.
Givenchy watches are available at ACHICA today and vintage pieces of jewellery are available from Sunday 13 January.
