Illustrator and interior design enthusiast Ros Shiers creates illustrative and typographic prints with loving notes, inspiring quotes and intricate drawings. Her love of drawing is shown in her pencil sketches of ice creams, vintage cameras, lipsticks and perfume bottles. ACHICA Living was delighted to catch up with Ros, who works from her studio in West London, to find out what makes her tick by asking her 20 questions…
1.What made you want to become an illustrator and what was your first big break?
My favourite lesson at school was Art and I loved drawing so it seemed like a good step to study Illustration at University. I was incredibly lucky to be offered a place on the esteemed Illustration degree course at Brighton University. When I first started as a freelance illustrator my first big advertising job was for Ford, I designed these huge posters that lined the Underground walkways near the V&A during fashion week. That was an exciting moment in my work life.
2. What inspires you daily?
There are so many wonderful blogs that I enjoy reading, which always inspire me in life and work. I also enjoy Pinterest and Instagram. Films are another great source of inspiration.
3. What’s your top design tip?
I am currently renovating my home and I think light is so important. I have lots of lamps and tealight holders that create a really romantic and cosy atmosphere in the evenings.
4. Describe your home style…
All the walls and doors are painted white in every room so there is a nice flow through the flat, which makes it feel more spacious and airy. I love visiting antique fairs and car boot sales and mix found objects with new design pieces. The white backdrop is great to showcase all the things that you collect and hold lovely memories.
5. What did you want to be when you were 10?
I had no idea.
6. What does your favourite personal design depict?
My favourite designs from my print collection are the detailed drawings, especially of ice creams in ‘We All Scream For Ice Cream’ and the ‘Vintage Cameras’.
7. Favourite artists?
Tim Walker, Basquiat, Julie Verhoeven and Andy Warhol.
8. Favourite TV/box set show?
Girls and Mad Men.
9. What song was number one the year you were born?
Heart of Glass – Blondie.
10. Favourite film?
It’s too hard to name one, I LOVE watching films… some of my favourites are: Life is Beautiful, Roman Holiday, The Royal Tenenbaums, Blue Valentine, Drive, Control, The Great Gatsby,
The Darjeeling Limited, Marley and Me and recently I loved Silver Linings Playbook.
11. Takeaway or home-cooked meal?
Home-cooked meal always.
12. How do you spend your weekends?
Usually a mixture of working, walking my Puggle Bailey with my husband, decorating, watching movies, cooking and having friends over for dinner.
13. What one thing can you not live without?
My husband, my twin sister and my dog… sorry thats three.
14. City or country?
At the moment I’m definitely a city girl, but country life does appeal for the future.
15. Cats or dogs?
16. What was the last thing you bought?
Original BTC Hector Table Lamp
17. What’s your motto?
I have many…
18. If you were invisible for the day what would you do?
I will have to think about that one!
19. What’s your favourite font?
I use lots of different ones for my prints, so I think a combination is visually interesting as they can work against each other and together .
20. You say: A little of what you fancy does you good. What do you fancy today?
Well thats depends, I’m dreaming of holidays at the moment, I’m dying to visit NYC again so I definitely fancy that, but I think in the context of that print being more about food then that would be some Lindt dark chocolate.
