One name that epitomises style and sophistication is Chanel. Her designs are timeless, luxurious and aspirational to say the least. As the Vintage Chanel collection of jewellery comes to ACHICA we shine the spotlight on this iconic designer…
Born in 1883, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel didn’t have the lavish lifestyle that you would expect, but spent most of her childhood in an orphanage. It was here that she learnt to sew – a skill that was destined to change her life. After dabbling in a short-lived career as a singer, Coco Chanel (as she soon became known) opened her first shop in Paris in 1910 selling hats. Not content with this, she set her sights on bigger and better things and soon enough began to make clothes.
In the 1920s, the French designer debuted her perfume Chanel No. 5, the first to feature a designer’s name, but it was with her clothes that really caused a controversy. Chanel took the fashion of her day and turned it on its head, moving it away from the constrained silhouette style of the era. Chanel’s clothes were created primarily with comfort in mind and she once said “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury”.
To add to this she took a colour often associated with mourning and recreated it as chic and glamorous. So influential was her style that even today the little black dress (or LBD) is considered essential to a woman’s wardrobe.
She went on to launch jewellery, scarves and handbags in which the interlocking Cs of Coco Chanel remains one if not the most recognised fashion symbols in the world.
