Going Dutch: Inspired design from Amsterdam

A day exploring Amsterdam’s design scene is most definitely a day well spent. Recently we were invited to attend a specially curated design walk by super-cool Dutch interiors magazine Eigen Huis & Interieur, as part of BlogTourCGN. As you can expect, we uncovered some absolute gems. Here are some highlights…

Hotel Droog turns the concept of a hotel on its head, playing up the peripheral elements, such as the shopping, gallery and restaurant while distilling the overnight experience down to just one room. ‘The one and only bedroom’ is perfectly appointed with stunning views over the Amsterdam skyline, and from just $200 a night, it’s not entirely out of your budget. The rest of Hotel is Droog is very cool indeed and well worth a peek.

Store Without a Home is a pop-up interior design boutique now in its third temporary space. Aside from the warming selection of herbal teas and delicious cupcakes there was a quirky selection of home accessories available.

Pronounced to rhyme with ‘toy,’ mooi is Dutch for beautiful – the extra ‘o’ is just for fun. It was an absolute delight to explore Moooi’s 700m2 showroom and see so many iconic products in the flesh. We also got to meet its youngest and hottest designer, Sjoerd Vrooland, the man behind the extension chair. We can’t promise you hot designers when you visit but it’s definitely worth checking out.

And last, but by no means least, Hutspot is a brilliant concept store run by four enthusiastic young entrepreneurs. It’s part exhibition space, part café, part shop (everything from the coffee cups to the coffee is for sale) and part flexible workspace for creative freelancers – it’s a hub of creativity and deservedly so.
