Tom Ford: Behind the luxurious brand

To say the Texas-born designer Tom Ford is talented is an understatement. The fashion icon, best known for his creative input at the Gucci fashion house, also has his own Tom Ford label, which amongst other fashion accessories features a range of luxury sunglasses. As the collection comes to ACHICA this week, we take a closer look behind the brand…

It all began…

During his final year of architecture when at the Parsons School of Design’s Paris campus he suddenly decided to switch to fashion. Speaking about this moment he once said: ‘I realized that fashion was the right balance between art and commerce, and that was it.’

Momentum gathered

In 1985, Tom landed his first job with sportswear designer Cathy Hardwick. After calling her office every day for a month his determination paid off and he worked as Hardwick’s design assistant for two years before designing jeans for Perry Ellis in New York. In 1990 and still relatively unknown, Ford moved to Milan to become the womanswear designer at Gucci - a company that at the time was in need of a revamp.

The mood of the moment

During his 15 year career there, Ford put his mark on the fashion industry and bought glamour back to the label. He introduced Halston-style hipsters, satin shirts and metallic patent boots. Gucci went on to acquire YSL and Ford was named creative director. Once again he worked his magic by bringing another label to the forefront of the fashion industry.

More than a label, it’s a way of life

In 2005, Ford launched his own fashion house, Tom Ford. He began with accessories but it was his sunglasses that became an instant hit. His first store opened in 2007 on New York City’s Madison Avenue. And after a six-year design hiatus, he launched his first fashion collection in 2010 proving to critics and fans alike that he hadn’t lost his Midas touch.
