Top 10 Plant Inspirations from Chelsea Flower Show 2013

RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a plantaholic’s paradise, serving up a collection of the most beautiful flowers and foliage from the very best nurseries in the country. We sneaked into the Grand Pavilion early, ahead of the crowds, to bring you our top 10 favourite plants from this year’s dazzling centenary show…

Rose ‘Dunham Massey’

The famous rose nursery Peter Beales has launched this rose at Chelsea this year in partnership with the National Trust, and it’s a real cracker. This gorgeous shrub with its peachy-pink classic flowers would sit perfectly in any cottage-style border.

Lavender trio

We were lured to Downderry Nursery’s stand by the gorgeous scent of lavender, and when we got there, the flower colours were equally alluring. This image shows the dark crimson ‘Whero Iti’, pale pink L. angustifolia ‘Miss Katherine’ and mauve L. angustifolia ‘Melissa Lilac’. Yum.

Iris ‘Pink Pelé’

If you’re looking to fill the front of a sunny border with colour in early summer, plump for this dwarf bearded iris in a fusion of caramel and pink shades from Cayeux. Dramatic yet compact, it would look great planted in long swathes.

Luzula sylvatica ‘Taggarts Cream’

This compact evergreen woodrush turned our heads, with its glossy bright green leaves and these unusual dangling flowers. It makes great ground cover, even on dry soils, and we spied it on the Oak Tree Nursery display.

Waterlily ‘Darwin’

If you’ve just installed a pond or want to brighten up an existing feature, head to Waterside Nurseries for a great selection of water lilies and aquatic plants. We fell in love this this rosy-pink variety, ideal for a medium-sized pool.

Clematis ‘Samaritan Jo’

Elegant and understated, this new patio clematis from Raymond Evison is sure to become a designer’s favourite, with its subtle pink-edged cream blooms, which flower all summer.

Heuchera ‘Rio’

Who could resist this leafy lovely from Heucheraholics. The bright amber foliage of this brand new heuchera would make a beautiful partner for other forms with dark red or green leaves.

Paeonia ‘Mackinac Grand’

Big, blowsy and bold, this sumptuous red peony from Binny Plants is a real show-stopper. It demands centre stage in a sunny border, and the ruffled flowers are set off by deeply cut, dark green foliage.

Streptocarpus ‘ Harlequin Damsel’

If you want to dress up your interior décor, few plants perform as well as Streptocarpus, which flower for up to ten months each year. World-famous breeders, Dibleys have the best choice, including this new little beauty, hot off the nursery bench.

Cornus sericea ‘Hedgerows Gold’

The plant that caught our eye on multi-award-winning Hillier Nurseries stand was this dramatic red-stemmed, variegated dogwood, Cornus sericea ‘Hedgerows Gold’ , which would  make the perfect backdrop to a sunny border.
