Homeware and textile designer Niki Jones has travelled to every corner of the world seeking out inspiration for her collections. As a result, each piece tells its own story right from its humble beginnings. As her range comes to ACHICA, we caught up with her to ask her our 20 questions…
1. Describe your brand in three words?
Quality, hand-crafted, timeless.
2. What are you working on at the moment?
Finalising my new collection for Autumn/Winter 2013.
3. What inspires you?
I find inspiration in every day life, but also while i’m travelling and being amongst new surroundings – this really heightens my creative senses.
4. Favourite designers?
Paola Navone and Ilse Crawford
5. Last thing you bought?
I recently bought a Peacock chair by Hans Wegner. It sits perfectly in a little sun trap bay window.
6. What is on your most-wanted list?
I am currently coveting one of my friends marble coffee tables. Carve round table by Bethan Gray for G&T.
7. If you were invisible, where would you go?
I would love to have the V&A to myself so I could sneak in after closing time and enjoy the peace.
8. What are your handbag essentials?
I wish I had one of those really organised hand bags but sadly it is usually full of bits of Lego and other toys. I don’t leave home without my Diptique solid fig perfume and my Aveda moisturiser. A notebook and pen can always be found.
9. What is your karaoke song?
Chakakan – I feel for you. Memories from a Japanese Karaoke bar.
10. Favourite meal of the day?
Dinner because I can relax and enjoy it with my son while spending some quality time with him. I do also love a long lazy Sunday lunch from time to time.
11. Your signature dish?
You can’t beat great bread, cheese, salad and a quality red wine. Easy to prepare, all about buying quality ingredients and stress free so you can enjoy being with your friends. I do make delicious roast veggies too.
12. Highlight of your career so far?
Starting my own collection. This year we have had some great things happen. We are now stocked in Abc Home NY, Lane Crawford is launching us in August and we are doing a pop up shop with Le Bon Marche in Paris in September. So some really exciting things in the pipeline.
13. Who would you like to design a piece for?
I would love to be commissioned by Linda Kanafani who established the shop Mint in London. She has an amazing eye and it would be fun to work on a totally bespoke project with someone of her expertise.
14. Favourite holiday destination?
Too tricky to just choose one. I love India for work, particularly Udaipur. I love Arran in Scotland as it is like a second home and is full of great child hood memories. Overall, I have the travel bug and do love discovering new places.
15. What is on your bucket list?
Would love to open my own shop one day, dive with whale sharks and experience Rio during carnival time.
16. Favourite TV show?
I was totally hooked on The Killing and then got into Borgen afterwards. I love the interiors in Borgen.
17. Guilty pleasure?
Coffee. I drink too much.
18. Favourite colour?
This is tricky as I love colour so much. I find it is more about a favourite colour combination. For me Chartreuse & Grey is a big one at the moment.
19. Six fantasy dinner party guests
Mark Rothko as I have a real love for his work. William Morris as he is the king of pattern. Paul Newman for a bit of easy on the eye plus he was pretty cool. Virginia Woolf as I am quite fascinated by her and the whole Bloomsbury set. Picasso as he has had such a profound effect on modern art and by all accounts was an amazing personality. Mozart as he was a musical genius and didn’t even know it. They all would definitely make for an interesting evening.
20. Top interior design tip?
There are no hard fast rules. Just enjoy it and buy things you love and cherish. Be bold and don’t be scared of colour. Always buy a generous sized rug and place furniture on top. This really pulls together the elements of a room and creates a sense of space.
