Ben Rousseau of Rousseau Design specialises in bespoke lighting, furniture and product design and high-end interiors. He loves to use illumination in room schemes. ‘It’s a great way to highlight shapes and design details,’ he explains. Here we take a look around his London family home…
Wow! We like what you’ve done with your serving hatch.
‘Thanks – I cut a large hole in the wall where the serving hatch used to be and lined the inside edge of the wall with LEDs and an opal white diffuser. Designing lighting effects is my passion, and it was great to experiment.’
TVs can be a bit of an eyesore. Tell us about what you’ve done with yours to create a special feature?
‘The television unit is framed, and creates storage space for DVDs and CDs. It opens at the flick of a switch. I used gloss cabinetry underneath, and there’s illuminated detail above the doors.’
How did you approach revamping the house?
‘Although it’s relatively modern, it needed a lot of work. We refitted the gloomy kitchen with glossy white units and mirrored splashbacks. The bare brick downstairs was painted white to show off the key pieces of furniture, too.’
We love the colour in the bathroom. What’s going on in here?
‘They’re colour-changing LED lights. The shower enclosure has a back-lit panel that goes through a sequence of colours. The shelving is also illuminated and there are special effects below the cabinets and above the sink.’
What about the bedroom – just a decorating job?
‘We knocked down walls in the house to make sense of the space. The master bedroom needed room to accommodate my bespoke walnut wardrobes and dressing table, which runs the length of the room.’
We love the lighting in the bedroom. Tell us about the bed?
‘The bed and headboard are made from the same black walnut as the wardrobes, dressing table and chest of drawers to keep the room co-ordinated. I’ve used LED lighting to frame the headboard, too.’
