Sunday Times' Pip McCormac on a fabulously floral trend

Chintz has a lot to answer for. It single-handedly ruined floral prints as if it was some sort of industrial weedkiller instead of a pretty daisy design. Suddenly florals looked fussy, old fashioned and like something you might find in the back of Granny’s bureau. But then teatime made a comeback, and all those old tea sets nestling, well, in the back of Granny’s bureau, suddenly became collectable again. And like a well-tended garden, florals are blooming marvelous and spreading all over the high street in modern shapes and contemporary colours.

So much more interesting than the traditional designs that cropped up in the 1950s, and more organic than Cath Kidston’s pop prints, modern florals provide an instant hit of colour without losing any of their prettiness. The familiarity of the pattern means that no matter how bright you go, it will never look too avant garde, and so is perhaps the least scary way of adding colour to your home. So you’ll get a bit of flower power even if you feel like a shrinking violet.
