Pantone’s colour of the year 2017 brings us down to earth

This year, Pantone's colour of 2017 is a zesty leafy shade named Greenery. Though not a new shade on the current design palette, this year's colour has been chosen for its stable, revitalising properties.

The Pantone Colour Institute have been forecasting an annual top pick since 2000, choosing a colour that reflects growing lifestyle trends and the current cultural climate. Leatrice Eiseman, Director of the Pantone Colour Institute says: “Greenery bursts forth to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment… Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”

Last year’s colours were Rose Quartz and Serenity, soft pastel shades of blue and pink reflecting a desire for calm and harmony. Greenery – or Pantone 15-0343 – marks a return to the bolder side of the spectrum. The vibrant colour has a “sense of buoyancy”, in Eiseman’s words, making it “reassuring yet assertive”.

The colour selection is chosen from the experts’ analysis of trends far beyond the interior design world, including shifts in ways of living, new artists, fashion, travel destinations, playstyles, socio-economic conditions and more.

In 2016, we saw a burst of popularity for indoors-outdoors living, including an abundance of interior gardening, plant motifs and florals, colour pops in the garden and a range of popular green shades including the jewel-tone emerald, which was Pantone’s colour of the year in 2013.

Unlike the luxury denoted by Emerald, the zesty yellow-green tone of Greenery propels the desire for nature to saturate our indoor spaces with a fresh, bold reviving hue.

Along with the core colour, the Pantone colour experts have selected 10 palettes to show Greenery paired with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels, metallics and even last years’ colours. The varying directions suggested for Greenery include Forest Floor tones of moss, willow and grape, dusty Grand Canyon shades of clay, mahogany and copper and the Calm It Down palette of grey lilac, green lily and spa blue.
