The Shortcut. Water gilded in silver leaf on wooden panel. The surface of the painting is prepared by gessoing it (fine plaster) then it is sanded down until it is as smooth as porcelain. Next clay and paint is applied on the basic image of the painting then silver leaf is floated onto the clay. When the silver leaf is between wet and dry it is burnish with an agate stone to bring up the shine of the silver. The artist then rubs through the image and paints again on top of the silver in clay and oil pastels. This is a lengthy process with lots of layering to give depth and subtle rich tones, the painting is then sealed with a varnish. The silver leaf of the painting gives a beautiful reflective quality enhanced by natural light. This water gilded wooden panel is approximately 2 inches deep, with no need to frame.
