Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world. This is because of the delicate and time-consuming way in which it is picked. Saffron comes from the stigmas of the crocus flower and hence imparts a beautiful yellow colour to any food (or hands or surfaces!) it touches. It also adds great flavour and is often used in Spanish cooking.
