ACHICA > Julie Vernon
Julie Vernon’s contemporary animal and figure studies capture the essence of her subjects as part of their environment. The meaning of her paintings can be found not only in the subject of the work but also in the marks, shapes and colours she uses. Her paintings are usually constructed using multiple layers of thin transparent glaze, with runs and pools of colour and often with areas wiped or scraped back to reveal previous layers. She draws her inspiration from observing nature and wildlife, always on the lookout for ‘magical moments’. Usually seeing a particular setting is what initially inspires her and then she will consider which bird or mammal will go well with that scene. Julie edits and manipulates the composition until satisfied, using abstract shapes to create a painting that has a sense of depth.
