Matisse & Picasso: Lithographs
Matisse and Picasso are undoubtedly the foremost painters of the first half of the 20th Century. In his final years Matisse embarked upon a series of highly original work using brightly coloured cut-out paper shapes arranged into pure abstract pattern. He considered these his new way of painting saying: ‘Scissors can acquire more feel for line than pencil and charcoal.’ Matisse worked with the French fine art printers Mourlot to create 39 images and a certificate of authenticity accompanies each 1954 lithograph. Meanwhile Picasso’s love of printmaking meant that by the time of his death in 1973 he had accumulated a huge body of print works and it is these we have access to today. Picasso created 42 linocuts in 1962, and works from the original plates are available here on ACHICA, each accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. These are highly valuable acquisitions.
